The comedian you never heard of could still be a winner.
In this offbeat, dramatic comedy, Johnny Lee dreams of becoming a comedian. Luckily, an older female named Jeanie shows up at his doorstep. As attraction builds and tensions rise, the two make courageous strides, creating positive changes in their unfortunate lives. Surprisingly, Johnny’s one-time sexual experience with Jeanie sends him on a surge of euphoric freedom and growth. From absurd scenes of him as a bus boy at a Mexican restaurant, to awkward scenes of jealousy, you will fall in love with the unconfident, good-willed Johnny. Set to grandiose Balkan music, The Purple Onion’s distinctive narrative style mixed with its warm humanism and quirky tone resembles films by indie icons such as Aki Kaurismäki, Jim Jarmusch, and Wes Anderson.
